Makkum, 9 July 2015 – All shipyards take a 'unique' yacht with them to the Hiswa in-water boat show. But what do we mean by 'unique'? One definition is: “the only one of its kind, unparalleled”.
Bestevaer 49ST Zwarte Raaf
And that certainly describes the Bestevaer 49ST 'Zwarte Raaf'. There is no second one: it is the only one of its kind. Although there are more 49-foot Bestevaers to be found, no two yachts are ever the same. Each owner has his own requirements: a lifting keel, painted hull, design interior, or back to basics. All of them custom-built yachts, like an Italian tailor-made suit.
We asked the owner of the Zwarte Raaf what his requirements were when he had the yacht built: "Suitable for solo sailing, a tiller, a minimum amount of technology on board, maximum draught of 2.10 metres, with a modern but nautical interior."
The Zwarte Raaf is clearly the smaller sister of the Bestevaer II, the yacht privately owned by designer Gerard Dijkstra. In terms of its design and looks the Zwarte Raaf is virtually identical to its illustrious predecessor. Unpainted, with just anti-slip on the walking areas, a deep, safe cockpit, watertight bulkheads, integrated aluminium bollards and of course a pilot house. An aluminium mast and jib on deck, with cutter rigging.
Koopmans 37 Blikvis
Another unique yacht that KM Yachtbuilders will have on display at the show is a Koopmans 37. This isn't a completely finished yacht, but a 'hull-plus'. The owner came to the shipyard wanting to finish the yacht himself. He did however need our expertise in aluminium construction, specifically for the centreboard keel and yacht legs. Eeuwe Kooi, owner of KM Yachtbuilders: "30 years ago my father himself, also an engineer and inventor, built his yacht 'De Wadloper' (‘The Wad walker’) with yacht legs. This made it possible for the yacht, at a rate of 20 metres an hour, to literally walk across the Wadden Sea flats. These legs provided support when the lifting keel was hauled in and the ship rested on the sand banks. We have taken over this principle in the Koopmans 37. It won't be walking the mud flats, but the legs give the hull stability when the yacht rests on the flats. They can easily be pulled up during sailing.
During the show a superb aluminium hull will be on display, with mast, winches and blocks, but without an interior. This will give visitors the opportunity to see what a plain structure looks like from inside out. After the show the owner will be placing the yacht at his own premises, where he will be completing the carpentry and finishing himself.
Bestevaer 45ST PURE
The latest development at KM Yachtbuilders is the Bestevaer 45ST PURE. Normally, our yachts are fully custom-built with every detail based on the owner's wishes. The PURE will be more of a series yacht. Aspects such as dimensions, deck plan, the location of the bulkheads, layout and styling are fixed. The owner can still exert a lot of influence over the final design, but not as much as for a custom-built yacht. The PURE philosophy is that it must remain a safe, seagoing and comfortable yacht, just like its custom-built siblings. There are two watertight bulkheads as standard (including for the engine and the rudder), integrated aluminium bollards, a pilot house, sheltered deep cockpit, unpainted hull and a practical interior. There are no unnecessary frills on board, such as 3 wet cells, air conditioning, dishwashers or an expensive teak deck. The name really says it all….
Have we evoked your interest in the new Bestevaer 45ST PURE? We'll be pleased to show you two large impressions of the sail plan, the interior options and of course the options list. We are currently building the first PURE, called 'Nescio'. It is due for completion at the beginning of next year. Construction on the next Bestevaer 45ST will start in September this year.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Hiswa in-water boat show at our stand E.06 from 1 to 6 September! You are of course also welcome to visit our shipyard, or see www.kmy.nl for our other custom yachts or B2B projects.

KM Yachtbuilders will be very well represented at this year's Colin Archer Memorial Race. No fewer than seven yachts built by the shipyard will be taking part in the 17th edition of this race.
The 2-yearly CAM Race will be getting underway on 5 July in Lauwersoog, the Netherlands. During the previous edition in 2012 the Bestewind 50 'Kooi Aap' came top in its class with a sailed time of 44:44 hours. This gave rise to the idea of taking part with more KMY yachts in the next edition. No fewer than seven KMY yachts will be at the starting line. The race covers approximately 365 miles to the Norwegian Stavern, close to Larvik. A total of around 70 yachts with a length over seven metres will be competing.
KM Yachtbuilders is also one of the main sponsors of the CAM-Race, which is organised entirely by volunteers.
Before the start the yachts will be at a jetty especially reserved for KMY in the outer harbour. You are welcome to come and admire the following KMY yachts there:
· Bestewind 50 ‘Kooi Aap’
· Bestevaer 49ST ‘Katharos’
· Bestevaer 53ST ‘Zeerover’
· Bestevaer 56ST ‘HannaH’
· Stadtship 56 ‘Oester’
· Stadtship 56 ‘Merrimac’
Stadtship 47 'Josephine'There will also be a KMY jetty available for the participating yachts on arrival in Stavern. All seven yachts are expected to arrive on Monday. On Tuesday evening a barbecue will be organised for the KMY participants, after which everyone will be going their own way on Wednesday.
We cordially invite you to be our guest during our Open Day on Saturday 19 April 2014. We open up our halls for anyone who is curious to see what we do. We have 7 yachts under construction and about 17 finished yachts to show.
MKII BESTEVAER 53ST UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT K&M YACHTBUILDERS
Makkum, 5 december 2013 – This year marks the 10th anniversary of the first Bestevaer 53ST ever built, commissioned by designer Gerard Dijkstra himself. This week, K&M began the construction of a new Bestevaer 53ST, the seventh of this length within the range of Bestevaer yachts with a upright stem (ST).
This will bring the number of Bestevaer STs afloat to 17, in lengths varying from 45 to 66 feet. Besides the new 53ST, another two ST yachts are currently under construction at K&M; a 49ST and 66ST.
The German owner had taken a good look at the existing Bestevaer yachts and therefore knew exactly what he did and did not want on board his ship. He saw a deep and safe cockpit, pilot house and water ballast system on board most ships, and these were features he himself wanted on board.
Like many aluminium K&M ships, this ship's hull is left unpainted. The walking surfaces on deck have a non-slip paint coating and the only teak on board is on the cockpit benches, coaming and floor. No rudder post steering this time around, but a steering wheel instead.
The use of aluminium, wood and unvarnished materials segregates the pilot house styling from that of the living interior. In turn, this interior has a modern design without mouldings or trimmings.
The living area naturally features a well equipped galley, spacious salon and day toilet. The guest cabin can be found underneath the pilot house, while the en-suite master cabin is forward. The bow is made from extra thick aluminium (10 mm instead of 6 mm).
This will be the first MKII version to be built. In the 10 years that the Bestevaer 53ST has been afloat, developments and technology in yacht building have not stood still. Just like in the automobile industry, it is important to occasionally review existing designs in detail in order to recognise opportunities for improvement, especially when market demands are also evolving.
The Bestevaer 53ST was designed as a tough and practical ship with a classic look, simple to sail with a small crew, low in maintenance, suitable for cold regions and of course offering perfect sailing characteristics and behaviour.
All Bestevaer yachts are designed by Dykstra Naval Architects in Amsterdam and built exclusively by K&M Yachtbuilders in Makkum. The shipyard has all the necessary facilities to keep the yacht in Makkum, from shell to launching, rather than it having to be transported between locations.
Makkum, 11 June 2013 – The 88 foot long 'TULIP' built by K&M Yachtbuilders will be one of the 19 competitors in the annual Superyacht Cup Palma, to be held this year from 19 to 22 June on Palma de Mallorca.
Although the 'Tulip' is the largest yacht built by K&M so far, it is one of the smaller participants in the Superyacht Cup Palma. The yacht is certainly a force to be reckoned with however, as can be read on the website of the Cup: “The latest yacht to register is the new modern-classic 26m Tulip, designed by German Frers and built by K&M Yachtbuilders in Holland. Tulip was launched in the Autumn 2012 and with her lightweight interior and carbon rig is likely to be a competitive entry.”
The world's most spectacular yachts will convene in Palma de Mallorca marina over the coming weeks. The 5 participating J class yachts will compete in their own race on the 19th, after which all the yachts will compete for the Cup. With a view to the varying sizes of the competitors, the yachts have been divided into two groups in order to give all participants an equal chance.
K&M would like to wish the 'Tulip' and its crew good luck and great fun during the races!
The Bestevaer 53ST “SUSE” will be exhibited at the Hanseboot Ancora Boat Show to be held in two weeks' time, from 24-26 May. The event is located in the town of Neustadt in Holstein (on the Baltic Sea), an hour's drive north of Hamburg.
The designer of the Bestevaer 53ST yachts, Gerard Dykstra, founder of Dykstra Naval Architects, may well have largely retired from his architectural agency by now, but he is still very much involved in the development and design of sailing yachts. The ‘SUSE’ was inspired by his own private yacht for example, also an aluminium Bestevaer 53ST, built by K&M Yachtbuilders.
The Bestevaer 53ST is a fine example of how ocean and racing sailor Dykstra has designed and built his own ideal yacht; a deep and safe cockpit, a pilot house to shelter and stay dry when sailing in bad weather conditions, lines leading to the cockpit and a long water line and deep keel for excellent sailing performance.
The Bestevaer 53ST ‘SUSE’ will certainly stand out in Neustadt harbour, with its partially black painted aluminium hull and green non-slip walking surfaces. It has a beautiful carbon mast on deck, and a rudder post in the cockpit.
The interior is light and open. White surfaces, mahogany cupboards and a 'beamed ceiling' all give it a classic modern look, while the coloured furnishings add a homely touch. The front cabin has two separate berths. Behind it, we find the bathroom with toilet. Opposite this, there is a separate berth. The kitchen is kitted with all possible conveniences of course and the saloon has a large table in the lounge area. The favourite spot on board is still the pilot house, thanks to its open views all round and contact with fellow sailors outdoors and below. There is another small bunk under the pilot house, the best place to nap while on watch.
Particulars: Carbon mast, rudder post, partially painted hull, swimming platform, pilot house, ‘Lazy Rack’ on boom, electric winches, central heating, small diesel heater, generator.

Bestewind 50: Winner of Yacht of the Year?
On the first Saturday of BOOT Düsseldorf we will find out whether the Bestewind 50 has been chosen as European Yacht of the Year! It is all very exciting.
After the Hiswa te Water exhibition in IJmuiden, various journalists from European water sports magazines have sailed with the Bestewind 50 and the other nominated ships. When they were on board they were very positive - in spite of the bad weather - so we are hopeful.
At our YouTube channel you can watch two videos which were made during the test voyage with 50-knot gusts!
The trade fair season is nearly upon us, and at K&M Yachtbuilders we are busy preparing ourselves. This year three trade fairs are in the diary, where K&M will only represent designs by Dykstra & Partners.
Båter I Sjøen 1 - 4 September 2011, Oslo (Sandvika)
The first one is the in-water boat show in Oslo, Båter I Sjøen, held in Sandvika, where K&M will proudly present the new Bestevaer 56ST "HannaH" to the public. Among the many polyester boats, this aluminium yacht will be a crowd puller. Her marine-blue hull and the pilot house with its traditional look will certainly catch the eye. The show will be held from 1-4 September 2011.
Hiswa te water 6-11 September 2011, Amsterdam (IJmuiden)
This is, of course, immediately followed by the wet Hiswa. Here we will show off as many as three yachts. The Bestevaer 45ST "Voyager" is the smallest Bestevaer we have built so far. K&M built two larger Bestevaers for the owner in the past, but he now wanted something smaller. This ship attracted a lot of attention in the past year during the building process, so we expect that it will also get many visitors during the trade fair.
The larger sister of the Bestevaer 45ST, the new Bestevaer 55ST "Pilgrim", will be moored at stand E-12. A spacious, beautiful but also practical ship, built entirely according to the owner's wishes. The water ballast, for instance, ensures comfortable sailing, while the crew is sitting safely in the deep cockpit.
The Bestewind 50 has been nominated for European Boat of the Year in the Luxury Cruiser category this year. Quite an honour! Inspired by Gerard Dijkstra's own Bestevaer 53ST, this GRP yacht was developed a number of years ago. Its major advantages are, again, the pilot house and the ship's spaciousness, with a headroom of nearly 2 metres.
A representative of the architects firm Dykstra & Partners will be present at K&M's stand every day.
Hanseboot 29 October - 6 November, Hamburg
At Hanseboot you will, of course, find K&M in the harbour rather than in the halls. K&M will present the Bestevaer 55ST "Morning Haze". This is another 55-feet yacht, but this one has a lift keel. The "Morning Haze" has also been built and styled according to the customer's requirements, and is therefore also different from the other Bestevaers. It has, for instance, a longer pilot house, and the cockpit has been moved further to the back.
UPDATE: Due to unforseen circomstances we will be showing the latest Bestewind 50. She has been nominated for European ánd Hiswa Boat of the Year!
In short, if you fancy visiting a ship built by K&M, you would be very welcome on board!
Proud! That is what we are at the moment. The Bestewind 50 has been nominated for European Yacht of the Year 2012!
In the 'Luxury Cruiser' segment we will have to 'take on' the Amel 64, the Beneteau Sense 50, the Hallberg Rassy 64 and the Oyster 625.
Each year, the editors of 11 European sailing magazines select different yachts in different segments. Following the Hiswa in Water Boat Show and the Barcelona Boat Show, the yachts will be extensivly sailed and tested by the judges. During Boot Dusseldorf in January the winners will be announced. Of course, we would be thrilled if the Bestewind 50 woud win, but we are honoured to have been nominated in the first place.
At 09.00 the mobile crane is ready and the yacht is moved outside. Owing to its length of over 26 metres, a small part of the stern remains in the hull construction hall and the stem protrudes over the road, into the reed border. The cranes raise her off the boat carrier and there it is: a 13-ton hull suspended on four belts about the ground.
The cranes do their work and slowly the yacht begins to move. She turns slowly in the belts. ‘What a spectacular sight. Marvellous!' cries the proud owner. Passers-by also stop and take photographs. It takes just 20 minutes to turn the hull completely around, and now it is ‘standing' upright. The mobile cranes place her gently back on the boat carrier. One of the cranes stops to pick up the keel casing for the hydraulic raising keel, which is lowered from the top into the middle of the vessel. Once that is done, it is driven back inside. The yacht's elegant lines can now be clearly seen: a modern underwater hull, with a straight bow and leaning stern.
The ‘Tulip' was designed by German Frers Naval Architects of Argentina. This is the biggest yacht that K&M Yachtbuilders has built to date. Eeuwe Kooi, owner of K&M; "The‘Tulip' is a tremendous project for us! Not just because it's our biggest yacht so far, but also because we are working intensively in partnership with German Frers and the yacht owner. Personal and open contact with all parties is very important: that's how you get the best results. In the summer of 2012 a beautiful yacht will be taking to the water in Makkum, something everyone can be proud of."
Now that the hull has been turned, the final preparations will be made before it is moved to the finishing hall. Once it arrives there a start will be made with the technical installation, the insulation of the hull, the fitting of the interior, spraying of the hull and so on.
The owner has already confirmed that he definitely wants to have the yacht built this year, which takes the counter to 6 Bestevaers with a length of 53 feet and an upright stem. That takes the total to 13 Bestevaer STs on the water. The size ranges from 45 to 56 feet.
During a visit to the shipyard in Makkum the owner was able to view several yachts and found that the Bestevaer 53ST was the closest in keeping with his requirements. He saw a deep, safe cockpit, pilot house and water ballast system on most of the yachts, and these are the applications he wanted on board himself. ‘When sailing, this raises comfort on board to such an extent that these options are in fact indispensable for me. Another point that appealed to me straight away was the option of sailing with a tiller. That evokes a certain amount of nostalgia, but I also find direct steering and the feel with the yacht very important.'
The initial navigation area will mainly be northern Germany, Scandinavia and Great Britain, but there are also plans to go on longer voyages. And that will certainly not be a problem for the Bestevaer 53ST!
