Makkum, 11 June 2013 – The 88 foot long 'TULIP' built by K&M Yachtbuilders will be one of the 19 competitors in the annual Superyacht Cup Palma, to be held this year from 19 to 22 June on Palma de Mallorca.

Although the 'Tulip' is the largest yacht built by K&M so far, it is one of the smaller participants in the Superyacht Cup Palma. The yacht is certainly a force to be reckoned with however, as can be read on the website of the Cup:  “The latest yacht to register is the new modern-classic 26m Tulip, designed by German Frers and built by K&M Yachtbuilders in Holland. Tulip was launched in the Autumn 2012 and with her lightweight interior and carbon rig is likely to be a competitive entry.”

The world's most spectacular yachts will convene in Palma de Mallorca marina over the coming weeks.  The 5 participating J class yachts will compete in their own race on the 19^th, after which all the yachts will compete for the Cup. With a view to the varying sizes of the competitors, the yachts have been divided into two groups in order to give all participants an equal chance.

K&M would like to wish the 'Tulip' and its crew good luck and great fun during the races!

The Bestevaer 53ST “SUSE” will be exhibited at the Hanseboot Ancora Boat Show to be held in two weeks' time, from 24-26 May. The event is located in the town of Neustadt in Holstein (on the Baltic Sea), an hour's drive north of Hamburg.

The designer of the Bestevaer 53ST yachts, Gerard Dykstra, founder of Dykstra Naval Architects, may well have largely retired from his architectural agency by now, but he is still very much involved in the development and design of sailing yachts. The ‘SUSE’ was inspired by his own private yacht for example, also an aluminium Bestevaer 53ST, built by K&M Yachtbuilders.

The Bestevaer 53ST is a fine example of how ocean and racing sailor Dykstra has designed and built his own ideal yacht; a deep and safe cockpit, a pilot house to shelter and stay dry when sailing in bad weather conditions, lines leading to the cockpit and a long water line and deep keel for excellent sailing performance.

The Bestevaer 53ST ‘SUSE’ will certainly stand out in Neustadt harbour, with its partially black painted aluminium hull and green non-slip walking surfaces. It has a beautiful carbon mast on deck, and a rudder post in the cockpit.

The interior is light and open. White surfaces, mahogany cupboards and a 'beamed ceiling' all give it a classic modern look, while the coloured furnishings add a homely touch. The front cabin has two separate berths. Behind it, we find the bathroom with toilet. Opposite this, there is a separate berth. The kitchen is kitted with all possible conveniences of course and the saloon has a large table in the lounge area. The favourite spot on board is still the pilot house, thanks to its open views all round and contact with fellow sailors outdoors and below. There is another small bunk under the pilot house, the best place to nap while on watch.

The Axonite 57, a perfect combination of performance and comfort!

K&M Yachtbuilders, Satellite Yacht Design and Guido de Groot Design present the Axonite 57. These three companies are respectively responsible for the building, design and styling of the yacht. At the end of 2010, the Axonite 69 was launched in Makkum, and now the companies developed a smaller version in the line of Axonites.

The result is a 57-footer, with the same design criteria and entirely designed in the same style like the Axonite 69. Here the focus is also on sailing and comfort. The ratio between the sail area and displacement is optimized by applying a retractable T-keel, with a variable draft of 2.90-1.40 meter and 1750 litre water ballast per side.

The choice to keep the cockpit as low as possible is made so the crew can move themselves safely at sea. This is further enhanced by fastening the mainsheet on a roll bar so there is no obstacle between the deck salon and the steering position. To move safely on deck, a bulwark is created. The permanent cockpit table offers a good grip during sailing and a cozy place in the port or at anchorage.

In the deck salon is a spacious settee in U-shape and the chart table. During sailing in bad weather the deck salon, with a full view around, is a safe and comfortable place to stay.
The spacious owner's cabin is located in the fore ship. The two spacious guest cabins have a double- and a bunk bed. The U-shaped galley is located underneath the front windows of the deck salon and is light and spacious. In the fore ship is a head with separate shower and the day head is located in the deck salon.

The engine room is located under the deck salon with space for the main engine, a generator, water maker and other technique. The hydraulic transom door is a wonderful bathing platform and also provides access to the dinghy storage.

The Axonite 57 is also available with alternative keel versions and lay outs. At the moment, the design team is also developing a 90 foot Axonite.

As every year you will find us again at the Internationale Bootsmesse Hamburg, also known as Hanseboot! The latest De  Bestevaer 53ST 'Suse' will be available for viewing. We are not in the Halls (Messe) but are in the cozy City Sport Hafen right on the river Elbe. Besides us, you can also visit yachts from Oyster Yachts, Contest Yachts, Hanse Yachts and Gunfleet. The classic schooner 'Mistral' (For sale) will also be present in the harbor.

City Sport Hafen is easy to reach with the U-bahn (underground). When exiting at stop Baumwall you will have the harbor in view. After visiting the yachts for Hanseboot, you could also enjoy a roundtrip on a boat through Hamburg. Or take a tour on board the historic Cap San Diego which is moored next to the harbor. A stroll through the new harbor area is also nice to do. The combination of old warehouses and new modern buildings is wonderful to see. The huge new Elbe Philharmonica building is also a very prominent feature.

Bestewind 50: Winner of Yacht of the Year?
On the first Saturday of BOOT Düsseldorf we will find out whether the Bestewind 50 has been chosen as European Yacht of the Year! It is all very exciting.
After the Hiswa te Water exhibition in IJmuiden, various journalists from European water sports magazines have sailed with the Bestewind 50 and the other nominated ships. When they were on board they were very positive - in spite of the bad weather - so we are hopeful.

The trade fair season is nearly upon us, and at K&M Yachtbuilders we are busy preparing ourselves. This year three trade fairs are in the diary, where K&M will only represent designs by Dykstra & Partners.

Båter I Sjøen 1 - 4 September 2011, Oslo (Sandvika)
The first one is the in-water boat show in Oslo, Båter I Sjøen, held in Sandvika, where K&M will proudly present the new Bestevaer 56ST "HannaH" to the public. Among the many polyester boats, this aluminium yacht will be a crowd puller. Her marine-blue hull and the pilot house with its traditional look will certainly catch the eye. The show will be held from 1-4 September 2011.

Hiswa te water 6-11 September 2011, Amsterdam (IJmuiden)
This is, of course, immediately followed by the wet Hiswa. Here we will show off as many as three yachts. The Bestevaer 45ST "Voyager" is the smallest Bestevaer we have built so far. K&M built two larger Bestevaers for the owner in the past, but he now wanted something smaller. This ship attracted a lot of attention in the past year during the building process, so we expect that it will also get many visitors during the trade fair.

The larger sister of the Bestevaer 45ST, the new Bestevaer 55ST "Pilgrim", will be moored at stand E-12. A spacious, beautiful but also practical ship, built entirely according to the owner's wishes. The water ballast, for instance, ensures comfortable sailing, while the crew is sitting safely in the deep cockpit.

The Bestewind 50 has been nominated for European Boat of the Year in the Luxury Cruiser category this year. Quite an honour! Inspired by Gerard Dijkstra's own Bestevaer 53ST, this GRP yacht was developed a number of years ago. Its major advantages are, again, the pilot house and the ship's spaciousness, with a headroom of nearly 2 metres.

A representative of the architects firm Dykstra & Partners will be present at K&M's stand every day.

Hanseboot 29 October - 6 November, Hamburg
At Hanseboot you will, of course, find K&M in the harbour rather than in the halls. K&M will present the Bestevaer 55ST "Morning Haze". This is another 55-feet yacht, but this one has a lift keel. The "Morning Haze" has also been built and styled according to the customer's requirements, and is therefore also different from the other Bestevaers. It has, for instance, a longer pilot house, and the cockpit has been moved further to the back.
UPDATE: Due to unforseen circomstances we will be showing the latest Bestewind 50. She has been nominated for European ánd Hiswa Boat of the Year!

In short, if you fancy visiting a ship built by K&M, you would be very welcome on board!

Proud! That is what we are at the moment.The Bestewind 50 has been nominated for European Yacht of the Year 2012!

 In the 'Luxury Cruiser' segment we will have to 'take on' the Amel 64, the Beneteau Sense 50, the Hallberg Rassy 64 and the Oyster 625.

Each year, the editors of 11 European sailing magazines select different yachts in different segments. Following the Hiswa in Water Boat Show and the Barcelona Boat Show, the yachts will be extensivly sailed and tested by the judges. During Boot Dusseldorf in January the winners will be announced. Of course, we would be thrilled if the Bestewind 50 woud win, but we are honoured to have been nominated in the first place.

De Stienplaat 7 in Makkum, Friday morning May 20th, 08.30 hrs. Two big mobile cranes arrive to turn the hull of the 88 foot ‘Tulip'. The hull builders of K&M Yachtbuilders have already spent a whole day making preparations.
The supports have been cut out and the hull has been raised with the gantry crane and is now waiting on the boat carrier. The front is already protruding out of the hall.

At 09.00 the mobile crane is ready and the yacht is moved outside. Owing to its length of over 26 metres, a small part of the stern remains in the hull construction hall and the stem protrudes over the road, into the reed border. The cranes raise her off the boat carrier and there it is: a 13-ton hull suspended on four belts about the ground.

The cranes do their work and slowly the yacht begins to move. She turns slowly in the belts. ‘What a spectacular sight. Marvellous!' cries the proud owner. Passers-by also stop and take photographs. It takes just 20 minutes to turn the hull completely around, and now it is ‘standing' upright. The mobile cranes place her gently back on the boat carrier. One of the cranes stops to pick up the keel casing for the hydraulic raising keel, which is lowered from the top into the middle of the vessel. Once that is done, it is driven back inside. The yacht's elegant lines can now be clearly seen: a modern underwater hull, with a straight bow and leaning stern.

The ‘Tulip' was designed by German Frers Naval Architects of Argentina. This is the biggest yacht that K&M Yachtbuilders has built to date. Eeuwe Kooi, owner of K&M; "The‘Tulip' is a tremendous project for us! Not just because it's our biggest yacht so far, but also because we are working intensively in partnership with German Frers and the yacht owner. Personal and open contact with all parties is very important: that's how you get the best results. In the summer of 2012 a beautiful yacht will be taking to the water in Makkum, something everyone can be proud of."

Now that the hull has been turned, the final preparations will be made before it is moved to the finishing hall. Once it arrives there a start will be made with the technical installation, the insulation of the hull, the fitting of the interior, spraying of the hull and so on.

The first Bestevaer 53ST of Gerard Dijkstra himself in 2003 clearly set a trend. This week K&M Yachtbuilders is able to report that it has sold a preliminary design for a new Bestevaer 53ST.

The owner has already confirmed that he definitely wants to have the yacht built this year, which takes the counter to 6 Bestevaers with a length of 53 feet and an upright stem. That takes the total to 13 Bestevaer STs on the water. The size ranges from 45 to 56 feet.

During a visit to the shipyard in Makkum the owner was able to view several yachts and found that the Bestevaer 53ST was the closest in keeping with his requirements. He saw a deep, safe cockpit, pilot house and water ballast system on most of the yachts, and these are the applications he wanted on board himself. ‘When sailing, this raises comfort on board to such an extent that these options are in fact indispensable for me. Another point that appealed to me straight away was the option of sailing with a tiller. That evokes a certain amount of nostalgia, but I also find direct steering and the feel with the yacht very important.'

The initial navigation area will mainly be northern Germany, Scandinavia and Great Britain, but there are also plans to go on longer voyages. And that will certainly not be a problem for the Bestevaer 53ST!

The first pile has been driven today! The offices of K&M and Kooi Makkum are being updated. Due to rapid growth of the companies, this was necessary. On the ground floor new offices will arrise, and on the top floor will be a new meeting room. On the right a rendering of the new facade.
